Ministry of Defiance

Three inches, six tracks and 22 minutes of the lo-budget machine peculiarity that anyone familiar with Dave Handford and his West Wales label has come to expect. His practise of starting with a brief blast of sound, before looping and distorting it to Valhalla, brings hypnotic and abrasive results. Not for the faint-hearted, mind. *** NOEL GARDNER -- BUZZ - JUNE 2004 Like Vienna's Mego Records, the appeal of West Wales electronica label Post Office Records is as much aesthetic as it is musical, every new release a compact triumph of meticulous handmade packaging presented with the cachet of the super-super limited edition. This is art, each textured cardboard sleeve implies: a position that would come across as pretentious, were it not for the general quality of the sounds within. The new CD from label founder David Handfords Ministry of Defiance project is built on a foundation of textured electronic noise, looped into tight repetition. Nuggets of conversation occasionally leap from the miasma, like stray voices picked up on a detuned radio. The stand-out however is Disinfectant Boy Blues - a macabre folk song, haunted by microphone hiss, and pock-marked with scabby sonic lesions. LOUIS PATTISON -- SOUND NATION - JUNE 2004 I’ve always liked the music of this Llandudoch based micro label. Perhaps it has something to do with the DIY philosophy it exposes, and the care that goes into the production process. Dave Handford and creates the sleeves himself, as well as the artwork and the CDs. The title track displays the methods of Ministry of Defiance perfectly – vocal cut-ups over a filthy hurly-burly. Worst Tea Shop In Goring is good as well, and the use of a factory siren and the sound of a CD player skipping on Ice Age Maker is hugely entertaining. My favourite though is Disinfectant Boy Blues - an exceedingly simple track, with a guitar loop and a number of vocal lines by Jo Shapland mixed together in order to create a harmonic effect.
